Buzz and Dotty Today
Life since 73-01:
RTU – MacDill, Holloman for 2 years, Korea for a year flying the OV-10, back to Holloman for 2 more years and then out and hired by Continental. I flew the Thud with the Tinker Reserves for 18 months (punched out on takeoff with an AB failure) and the A7 with Albuquerque for 5 years (what a great unit).
Dotty is a sweetheart and still puts up with me. We have one son, Matt, who is now 33. He just got engaged to a great girl and the wedding date is 2012 (that is as close as they can call it right now). Matt graduated with a Geology degree from Stephen F. Austin University and has worked for Fugro services as a Geo-Physicist since graduation. They are an International company specializing in seismic surveying of the ocean floor for oil exploration purposes. He goes off shore about 60 days a year. Dotty taught school up until Matt’s birth and has been a stay-at-home Mom ever since.
Life with Continental dragged us around from El Paso to Albuquerque (primarily there for the Guard and commuting to El Paso for the airline) and then to the Houston area. For the last 12 years we have been in a Lake Conroe area community and this is probably it for us until EMS shows up. I missed the Air Force but life with Continental was good and rewarding. I was lucky to have been with the same airline for my entire 30 year career – most airline pilots seem to have tales of woe about at least one airline demise along the way. Continental came close a few times but fortunately survived. I flew the 727, 737 and finished up on the 777. I taught in the training department for 10 years (737) and loved the teaching and procedure development that I worked on extensively. Flying the 777 was a great way to finish – a wonderful machine. Out of Houston our only destinations on the airplane were London, Paris and Tokyo – all great layovers.
I continue to dabble at marathon kayak racing and mountain bike training (even though the old bod has been broken a few times) and racing along with bicycle building (for parts money), a bicycle donation ministry through church, R/C flying, fishing and golf. Dotty wants to travel more so we will be adding more of that to the mix.
