Steve Smitherman
Yearbook Photo
See if you can guess which picture is the real Steve and Anne Smitherman:
Enjoyed 22 years in USAF – flew jets; maintained jets; AOC’d; did Foreign Military Sales; did NATO staff - 3½ years in Naples, Italy did not suck. Anne gave up a teaching position and imminent tenure at every stop along the way.
Retired in 1993 in Tucson and spent the first 18 months as a Financial Consultant (no one in aviation would hire me except the airlines – I wanted to run one, not fly for it). Interesting but not very lucrative. Finally able to get a real job in 1995 w/ Southwest Airlines as Director of Maintenance Planning & Scheduling – Anne gave up another tenure opportunity and followed me to Dallas. Had a great 4 years w/ Southwest.
Spent 11 years with AAR CORP (aviation/aerospace aftermarket service company; commercial & defense) in the Chicago suburbs. VP of Business Development for several parts of AAR. Anne got tired of giving up teaching jobs so when we moved to Wheaton, IL she only did substitute teaching and greatly enjoyed being able to pick who and when to teach.
Now in Disneyworld, FL, doing BD for Raytheon. They treat me well; we’re renting a house/pool on the golf course; and Anne is on a golf scholarship so all is right with the world.
Our son, Dan, 38, lives in the Chicago burbs with his second wife. Has 2 great boys – Erik, 17 and Brian, 16 – and the coolest little girl in the world – Samantha Rose, 5 in September.
Our daughter, Beth, 35, works for Pier One, has found her home in Dallas and has a great group of friends.
As we have always done, we continue to travel whenever we can – Anne uses my miles; I pay for my tickets – including weekend “adventures” to nearby things. Between us we’ve hit 6 of the 7 continents, 49 of the 50 states, and lots of countries, including a Bulgarian adventure (but that’s a story for another time). Otherwise we play golf, sit by the pool and enjoy a wee dram now and again.
